Thanks for the comment, Anurag. On the subject of the history of mankind, a post entitled "The proper reverence due those who have gone before" by PZ Myers also struck a chord in me. Not sure if you've seen it already, but I think it's worth a read: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2006/01/the_proper_reverence_due_those.php

Hi Gary,
I just came to on your post via Pharyngula.
I have read so many of such articles that I wasn't sure how much of the post I would read, but after the first few lines I didn't feel like stopping. It was almost exactly the same experience I had growing up. I can even remember back the age when I use to feel God is everyone all around me, watching me and judging my actions and I must be a good boy. Somewhere between then and my 12th birthday all such feelings were gone. Although our experiences were very similar, on one note it was very different, I was raised a Hindu. I remember my skepticism began when I started reading Cosmos by Carl Sagan. It was the history of mankind, the age of the universe and other topics that got me thinking. I remember distinctly that when the Mars Pathfinder landed on Mars in 97, for some reason that cemented the deal for me :P
Anyway, I just thought I would share my experience too!

Hi Gary - I've posted a
<a href="http://allthelittleepsilons.blogspot.com/2010/07/favourite-prayers.html" rel="nofollow">link to you here
</a>
come on over and pay me a visit - it won't do you any harm;)

I'm Irish, living in England, my children are half-African, and I've loads of relatives all over Canada including Toronto. I'm a born again Catholic - was disaffected like you to a certain extent - but now my mother says I'm a fanatic!

Hi Gary

I was looking for an image of "Jesus Mary and Joseph" and got linked to you here.

Hope your Mum has changed her mind, and you have further to go on your journey through life to discover the riches you have rejected - you wouldn't be the first:)

Come and visit my blog and see another story unfold...

The Shack!! - I would not recommend - imo it's a load of oul twaddle!

May your life be happy and fulfilled!

Hi Garry,

Me again. Just caught this blog - albeit a bit late.

If you are willing, I would like to encourage, challenge, etc. you to read two amazing books: The Shack by William P. Young (NY #1 best seller for umpteen weeks) and The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning (an ex-Catholic priest).

So many ask, "Is that all there is to life?" and I want to scream, "No!"

What you experienced in your youth was not of God. Trust me.

"My way of thinking and eventual freedom from religion led me to the belief (if I may use that word) that this life is all we have. Nothing else. Just this one shot at happiness and enjoyment of the world and all it has to offer. This understanding makes faith in any of the major religions, or belief in any of the lesser known world views, seem so trivial."

Well said! Our one shot at happiness, how could one be so disconnected as to think, "well, if i don't get it in this life, my God will give it to me in the next."
I love how you said "freedom from religion" because that is just how i feel; religion is overbearing, its about fear, being free from the primitive brainwashing is something to celebrate; it is the victory of logic and critical thinking over severe indoctrination.
